www.nyishi.org

Aahh!… finally a site of our own – how I longed for it.

Well, I almost gave up searching for the sites designed and maintained by our own people (here I’m excluding the Government sites, which are being hosted, designed and maintained by National Informatics Center (NIC) people) – be it relevant or irrelevant, well designed or not- but a site of and by our own people; whenever I get chance to log onto the net (the net connectivity being very poor at this part of the country), until I came across this site today.

I won’t say that www.nyishi.org is a very cool site as being in a very nascent stage, lots has to be done (most of the pages are under construction) but I would definitely say that this is a very humble effort by NES (Nyishi Elite Society) based at Nyirobjolli (is it Nirjuli?- as we know) to showcase their rich tradition, culture, history etc., to the entire world through this site.

This site would be helpful for those who wants to know about the tradition, culture, rituals, history etc., of Nyishi Community of Arunachal Pradesh.

“Nishi.org – A Home for the Nyishi’s on the Net” being the tagline of the site, it should have incorporated Chat Room so that Nyishi Community across the globe may hang around to share their views. Also, a mailbox/e-mail account would have been an added attraction.

Overall, I would recommend this site if you are interested to know more about Nyishi Community.

P.S.: If anyone knows about sites of other communities of Arunachal Pradesh do let me know.

    Abstract
Mithun (Bos Frontalis) is a semi domesticated animal and reared under free grazing condition mainly for economic, social, cultural and meat purposes. This animal is mostly found north eastern states of India i.e. Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram etc. In the context of Arunachal Pradesh, since from time immemorial Mithun has been playing an important role in determining various traditional and cultural values of tribal people, especially among the Tani group i.e. Apatani, Tagin, Adi, Nyishi and Galo. In fact Wealth and prestige of person in tribal society of Arunachal Pradesh are determined by the numbers of bros frontal he possess.
Nyishi is the one of the major tribe of Aunachal Pradesh whose population is distribute in five districts i.e. Papum Pare, lower Subansiri, Upper Subansiri, Kurung Kumey and East Kameng. Nyishis are very famous for its rich cultural heritage. Due to inherent cultural values and dynamism, Mithun (Sebee in local term) plays a significant role in the economic development of Nyishis. Before monetisation, in the traditional economy of the Nyshis; Mithun was used as the medium of commodities exchange (Barter system) and which is still a common practice among the people residing in villages. Besides, Mithuns are also used in the settlement of disputes, rituals, festivals, marriage etc. In the traditional economy the Nyshis; prestige, respect, honour and status of person was determined by the numbers of Mithun (Bros frontal) he posses and therefore Mithun is still considered as social assets.
Over the years due to economic dynamism, uses of Mithun are increasing towards commercial purposes. In fact, some of the Nyishi families are surviving and educating their children by selling Mithun meat in the market at Rs 300 per kg. Besides, Mithun is also considered as a social security during by the Nyishis during any kind emergency in health and other household related problems.
However, due to limitless killing of Mithun during election and marriage ceremony, Mithun population are reducing drastically. As per the World Convention Union, this species is vulnerable to extinction. Therefore, considering the economic importance of Mithun, proper research and in-depth study is very much required for the sustainable management of Mithun.
Thus, in the present study an attempt shall be made to discuss the various economic dynamics of Mithun as well as to formulate strategy to address the problems.
