Arunachalee Film 'SONAM' at International Film Festival

The maiden full length feature film from the state "Sonam" is one amongst the 2 films that were selected to represent the country, to be screened during November 26 to December 3 International Film Festival at Goa.

Considering the lack of infrastructure and expertise in film making, it is a rare feat from the state of Arunachal Pradesh.

Based on Assamese novel by Sahitya Academy Awardee writer Y.D. Thongchi, the film 'Sonam' is directed by Ashun Mazid and produced by Ashok Jhuria under the banner 'Garima Mountain Hive' in association with Itanagar based public charitable trust 'Mountain Hive'. The cast include veteren apatani actor Hage D. Appa as the protagonist Lobsang and the title role is played by Tashi Lamu. These two are supported by another 26 actors of which 2 are from Sikkim.

The story revolves around Polyandry and the socio-cultural ethos of the Brokpas- a Yak herding society-a sub-tribe of Monpas of West Kameng and Tawang District of Arunachal Pradesh.

The movie was shot at an altitude of above 10,000 ft. in the Tawang and Dirang areas. The interesting aspect of the movie is that except for actor from Sikkim, none of the local actors had any formal training in acting and the movie was shot entirely in local Monpa dialect.
